Things To Consider When Seeking Membership Page 3 One should enjoy, or want to learn to enjoy, the company of men from all different social strata, faiths, backgrounds, races, countries, and ages, since Masonry is universal in its ideals. One should consider their family obligations. In Masonry, the family and one’s obligations and commitments to them, come first. One should have the time to participate in Masonic activities. Initially, this will require two evenings per week for Study Club and Instruction. After that, one will need at least one evening per month for Stated Meetings. If one wishes to be more involved in Lodge activities, one will need a couple of more evenings per month for Called Meetings. All members are required to attend The Grand Master's Official Visit, The Grand Master's Conference, and a Masonic Education Workshop per year. Additionally, one is required to work in any one of the committees of his choice. One will always get out of Masonry what one puts into it. One should be able to afford the initiation fees and the annual dues without hardship to oneself or their family. One should come to Masonry "of his own free will and accord." One should come because one wants to improve himself, to enjoy the company of other great people, and to help others. Masonry is built upon the tenets of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. Masons are expected to demonstrate moral character, integrity, charity, and honesty. Furthermore, the virtues of cleanliness, common courtesy, compassion, empathy, encouragement, equality, faith, friendliness, freedom, fervency, generosity, good-will, hope, hygiene, industriousness, joy, kindness, more light, non-judgment, peace, sharing, spirituality, tranquility, well-being, and zeal, among others, are or should be the norm within our confines. One must be willing to conform and strive to live their life accordingly. To Begin the Process One should first seek out their state's Grand Lodge website and go to the “Lodge Locator” to find the Lodge nearest them. If you are resident of Texas, there is a link on the upper right-hand of this site to the Grand Lodge of Texas. If you live outside of Texas, you might want to click on the link to the Masonic Service Association of North America or the link to the Grand Lodges of the United States. The last sites mentioned are full with great information and include a Grand Lodge Locator for almost every Grand Lodge within the United States. After a Lodge is located, one will want to contact that Lodge's Secretary who will assist one in "Petitioning for the Degrees in Masonry," thus gaining membership into the lodge. If the Lodge's Secretary is not available, he will lead you to the right committee for accomplishing the same. Petitioning our Lodge involves filling out a Petition for the Degrees in Masonry and getting to know members of the Lodge. Two Recommenders, usually members of the lodge one is petitioning, and three other Masons, who can be members of any other lodge, or preferably from the same lodge, will have to sign the submitted petition. The Master of the Lodge will appoint an Investigation Committee to visit with the Petitioner prior to the Lodge balloting upon any certain petition, usually before the next Stated Meeting, or a period of thirty days. After balloting, the Petitioner will be notified of either his acceptance or rejection into the Lodge, at which point, if accepted, the Conferral of the first degree will be scheduled and his availability confirmed for the same.
